Introduction to Fashion Styling
Class 1 Reflective
Having experienced aspects of Fashion Styling as a subject elective in Semester 2, I was extremely intrigued with the course’s content. A Fashion Stylist is one of the most popular emerging professions in the fashion world globally and is the job title of someone who selects the clothing and accessories for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities. We firstly discussed in class about the different expectations of outcome of all students which opened my mind to various more opportunities.
As the talks went ahead, I began to understand the importance of being industry updated all the time. The role of a Fashion stylist is heavily dependent of his/her knowledge of the trends and happenings not only inside the fashion industry but also in areas of sports, politics, music, technologies, etc. To acquire this information, today the internet provides a great platform. I must follow major people, brands, influencers, forecasting companies and more to receive the latest pointers. Staying updated with forecasts and trends will help in changing my own perspective towards each and every industrial assignment done as a Stylist. For the same, sources such as Vogue, high end designers, fashion forecasting websites would be the first small step into the enormous industry of Fashion.
Styling as a whole can be of any object, a fruit basket or even a brunch table setting. Fashion styling specifically is required to carry and maintain the image/ reputation of an individual as such actors, characters, etc. in various shows, plays, event and more. There are various types of Fashion Stylists such as Editorial, Video/Commercial, Television, Wardrobe, Show, Live performance, Celebrity, Corporate, Personal shopping, Runway, Catalogue, Retail fashion, Prop and set, Photoshoot, Merchandise stylists. A personal stylist is concerned with an individual rather than a particular fashion brand.
The job of a Fashion stylist begins with a brief of the character/ personality of the person to be dressed. He/ she creates a look that compliments the required visual to create user experience by setting a color palette and combination. This combination is now sourced in from various brands under the guidelines of the designer. Most boutiques and designers will want to be left with a deposit or credit card details in case the garment or accessory becomes damaged while on loan. The stylist is solely responsible for the noting of this merchandize exchange and its storage and final look. But going back to where it begins the stylist cannot create a look for the role of a mother that dresses like a mother did in the 80s. Hence, they require to know about new and upcoming trends. Also to style a person, it is necessary to find the thin line between the self personality and requirements of role to be played. The stylist who pay more heed to news from the sports, technology, makeup trends. The role of a stylist varies heavily from adaption of garment to its surroundings to transportation of the garments sourced.
Further to gain a better understanding of Fashion styling we mapped the lists of content we though belongs to Fashion and Communication. Under the Fashion section, we noted- forecasting, expression of emotion/aesthetics, confidence, style, brand, branding and promotions, celebrities, fashion icons, target market, changes in fashion, adaptability of fashion, luxury of fashion, lifestyle, standards of living; influence of gender, culture, geographical location, consumer behavior; textile, knitwear, fashion shows, exhibitions, sustainable fashion, history of fashion, ethics, art, inspiration sources and display, nature, combinations of trends of the past, etc. Whereas under Communications, we discussed ways of communicating and concluded by listing 5 senses of humans (visual, sound, touch, taste, smell). all of the aspects of Fashion were comfortably connected with the senses proving why they are important to be learnt.
We concluded by understanding why Fashion Styling and a Stylist are important in Fashion Communications. My perception towards the field was very narrow until I heard about all the information given by the faculty. This detailed explanation has given me a larger perspective filled with endless opportunities and industrial platforms. The blogs and websites mention all the hottest news of the industry. Recently I read about the Dior’s installation gallery of thousands of fire resistant paper flowers carefully imitated from the flowers of the designers garden itself, and also the million dollar deal between Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo has started a fire of predictions among people.
